Thunder Bay municipal election, 2018

The Thunder Bay, Ontario municipal election of 2018 is scheduled for October 22, 2018. On that day voters will select a mayor, five at-large city councillors and seven ward councillors in McKellar, McIntyre, Red River, Neebing, Westfort, Current River and Northwood wards. Voters will also cast ballots for local school board officials.

Registration for candidates officially opened on May 1, 2018.

Prior to the election, at-large Councillor Iain Angus,[1] a former NDP MPP and MP, declared he planned to seek the mayor's chair after serving four terms on council. Fellow at-large councillor Larry Hebert announced his mayoralty candidacy on April 27 outside city hall.[2] Jim Gamble, who finished runner-up to Lynn Peterson in 2006, announced in 2017 he was running for mayor.[3] Kevin Cernjul, a vocalist with the band Bay Street Bastards, filed his nomination papers on Day 1 of the filing period.[4]

Incumbent mayor Keith Hobbs initially indicated that he does not plan to seek a third term,[5] but indicated several weeks later that he is reconsidering his decision.[6] On July 22, 2018, Hobbs confirmed he will not be running for any municipal office in the 2018 election.[7]
