Minaj long time recording engineer Aubry "Big Juice" Delaine talked to Rolling Stone about working with Minaj on her fourth album Queen.According to Delaine he said the following about the song:
"On “Thought I Knew You,” it had to be smooth, something that changed your mood and put you in another place when you listen to it. The sonics have to match the mood that is being sung or rapped about."[2]

After the release of Queen, "Thought I knew You" debuted on Billboard Hot 100 chart at number 98, becoming Minaj ninety eight entry on the chart.[3] "Thought I knew You" also entered on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs chart at number 49.

"Thought I knew You" is an uptempo synth-pop song and R&B -infused beats. "Thought I knew You" is written in the key of C♯ minor the track features a light reggae beat.[4]According to Minaj's recording engineer, Aubry "Big Juice" Delaine in a interview with Rolling Stone said, "he made sure the song's vibe fitted in with its lyrical content. On "Thought I Knew You," it had to be smooth, something that changed your mood and put you in another place when you listen to it," he said.
