Thomas Fletcher (diplomat)
Thomas Stuart Francis "Tom" Fletcher CMG (born 27 March 1975) is a former British diplomat. From 2011-2015, he was the UK's Ambassador to Lebanon.[1][2] He is now a Visiting Professor at NYU and author of 'The Naked Diplomat' (Harper Collins, 2016).
Early life
Fletcher was educated at The Harvey Grammar School, Folkestone, and at Hertford College, Oxford, where he was awarded first class honours in Modern History. He was Junior Common Room President at Hertford College.
Career
Tom Fletcher is a Visiting Professor of International Relations at New York University,[3] a Visiting Professor at the Emirates Diplomatic Academy, and an adviser to the Global Business Coalition for Education. He is an Honorary Fellow of Oxford University.
Fletcher was British Ambassador to Lebanon (2011–15)[4] and the 10 Downing Street foreign policy adviser to Prime Ministers Tony Blair, Gordon Brown and David Cameron (2007–11). He previously served as a British diplomat in Nairobi and Paris, and as the Private Secretary to FCO Ministers Baroness Valerie Amos and Chris Mullin.
He chairs the International Board of the Creative Industries Federation.[5]
He led a review of British diplomacy for the UK Foreign Office in 2016,[6] and published a report on the future of the United Nations in 2017.[7]
His book, Naked Diplomacy - Power and Statecraft in the Digital Age, was published by Harper Collins on 2 June 2016.[8] It is now the best selling book on diplomacy by a British writer.
Personal life
He is married to Dr Louise Fletcher, an Irish psychotherapist. They have two sons. He is an avid cricket fan and occasionally plays for "his" team - The Strollers
