Theodor Capitani von Kurnatowski (born March 19, 1980), known professionally as Theo Von, is an American stand-up comedian, podcaster, television personality, host, and actor. In 2000, while still in college, he appeared as a cast member of the MTV reality television series Road Rules: Maximum Velocity Tour. He was then a contestant on four seasons of MTV's series Real World/Road Rules Challenge: Battle of the Seasons (2002), The Gauntlet (2003-2004), Battle of the Sexes 2 (2004-2005) and Fresh Meat (2006). From 2013 to 2014, he hosted the comedy game show Deal with It. Since 2016, he has hosted This Past Weekend, a twice-weekly podcast which alternates between interviews with guests and solo shows.
Early life
Theo Von was born Theodor Capitani von Kurnatowski, in Covington, Louisiana, the son of Gina Capitani and the late Roland von Kurnatowski Sr. He has an older brother and two younger sisters, all of whom currently reside in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. His father was originally from Nicaragua and was 70 years old when Theo was born.[1]
Von's hometown of Covington sits in a region Theo claims as "The Stray Animal Belt", a geographical distribution of stray animals spanning from the Southeast to the upper Midwest states.[2][3]
Career
In 2009, Von created "crank texting" (sending a text message to random phone numbers to incite conversations), and began his crank texting blog, http://cranktexts.com/, which was picked up as a column by CollegeHumor a year later.[4][5]
Road Rules
Von first gained fame during his college days on Road Rules: Maximum Velocity Tour when he was recruited from college when he was 19. After the show ended, Von was harassed by locals in Louisiana.[6] Upset at this reaction when the show ended in 2000, he journeyed to Los Angeles at age 23.[7] When he moved to Hollywood, talent agents would not give him a chance, viewing him as a reality TV star.[6] It took upwards of 10 years to shake the reality TV star image and establish himself as a comedian.[8]
Deal with It
Von hosted the TBS hidden camera show Deal With It, executive produced by Howie Mandel, for its run of three seasons from 2013 to 2014.[9] Von has also been seen on The Arsenio Hall Show, Hello Ross, Chelsea Lately and Watch What Happens Live.
Allegedly with (podcast)
In 2015 Theo started a weekly podcast with Matthew Cole Weiss called Allegedly with Theo Von & Matthew Cole Weiss. Two totally opposite friends – comedian Theo Von and filmmaker/journalist Matt Cole Weiss - compete to see who has better “alleged" tales of celebrities, hilarity, trauma, dating, success and failure from their years living in Hollywood.
