The Wilmette Theatre

The Wilmette Theatre is the premiere multi-arts and performance center anchoring the downtown business district by providing vibrant entertainment, education and enrichment for the community. We are a 501(c)3 not for profit organization so all donations are fully tax deductible. The theatre does not receive any government funding.

The Theatre was opened in 1913 and people could watch films for 10¢ a ticket. Around 1950, Encyclopædia Britannica Films (EBF) bought the building. In 1966 Richard Stern bought the Theatre from EBF, and operated it for 40 years.[1]

The Theatre became a not for profit in 2011. Programming includes movies, partnerships with leading cultural institutions, and a growing list of live events. There are 2 theatre, one seating 140 with a stage, lighting and sound system. The other theatre has 110 seats and event space in the rear of the theatre. Many organizations rent the theatre for fundraisers, private screenings and live events.

Programming

The Wilmette Theatre partners with other cultural organizations to present unique programming. Wilmette Theatre in partnership with The Field Museum hosts a film series that promotes scientific literacy through entertainment. Each of the films is paired with a notable scientist from The Field Museum, who presents and leads a discussion following the screening that delve into relevant scientific topics. [2]

Wilmette Theatre and the Writers Theatre in Glencoe partner to present a curated selection of films that complement the lineup of theatrical productions. The series is part of From Page to Stage, an initiative started by the Writers Theatre over a decade ago that presents workshops, special events and lectures through collaboration with North Shore organizations and public libraries. A representative from Writers Theatre leads a discussion after each film, exploring themes raised and encouraging discussion from the audience. Audience members have the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the Writers Theatre production as well. [3]
