The Voice Kids is a German music talent show for younger singers, based on the concept of the show The Voice of Germany. The first broadcast took place on 5 April 2013 on Sat.1. The first season was won by twelve year-old Michèle from Lampenberg (Switzerland). The second season began on 12 March 2014, and was won by Danyiom from Ludwigsburg. From 27 February to 24 April 2015 the third season aired, which won by Berliner Noah Levi. The fourth season began on 5 February 2016, and was won by Lukas from Austria. The fifth season began on 5 February 2017, and was won by Sofie from Lower Saxony.

Format

On 25 October 2012, Sat1 announced that they will produce the a children's version of The Voice of Germany with Talpa and Schwartzkopff TV Productions. The new show, The Voice Kids, is based on the format of the original show and focuses on children aged from 8 to 14 years. Performers for the first season had to apply to participate, and about 70 children were cast for the first phase, the "Blind Auditions". There, the children have to sing alone in front of live audiences. The 3 jury members are sitting in a swivel chair with their back to the stage and cannot see the candidates. During the performance, they can elect to support a candidate by pressing a buzzer, which will automatically turn their seat towards the stage. The candidate continues to the next round if he or she receives at least one of the three jury votes. The candidate chooses a coach for the further rounds from all jury members who supported him or her.

It follows a training week in which the coaches prepare their candidates called the "Battle Round" second phase. In the Battle Round three candidates of the same coaching group to sing a song in the trio. Only one of the three candidates is further decision of the respective coaches. The winner of the talent competition receives a training stipend of €15,000 and an optional recording contract. The parents of the victor decide whether they pursue this option or not.

The Voice Kids Germany is the most internationally popular version of the Voice concept with a large YouTube audience for its clips with strong audience interest that stretches far beyond fellow Europeans from Brazil to Vietnam to the Philippines. This is in part due to the fact that the contestants often have a multicultural background with one German parent and one immigrant parent or are first generation German born to an immigrant family. This YouTube impact is exemplified by then-13-year-old performer Laura Kamhuber, born in Austria, whose performance of Dolly Parton's anthem "I Will Always Love You" in the blind audition of the first (2013) series has garnered over 165 million views on YouTube (as of March 2018),[1] and is the most watched YouTube video by an Austrian artist.[2]
