The Hype Bros were a professional wrestling tag team which performed in WWE on its SmackDown brand. The team, composed of Zack Ryder and Mojo Rawley, was formed in June 2015 on the development territory, NXT.

History

WWE

NXT (2015–2016)

In June 2015, Zack Ryder debuted in NXT, forming an alliance with Mojo Rawley, dubbing themselves as The Hype Bros.[1] The Hype Bros went on to defeat Elias Samson and Mike Rallis at the May 21st NXT TV tapings. Three weeks later, with the duo officially recognized as a tag team, they defeated the team of Angelo Dawkins and Sawyer Fulton on the June 18 TV taping. After a month-long feud with the likes of The Revival, American Alpha, along with countless victories over the teams, The Hype Bros teamed up with Enzo Amore and Colin Cassady to defeat Gable, Jordan, Wilder and Dawson in an eight-man tag team match at NXT TakeOver: Brooklyn.

On the October 16 edition of NXT, The Hype Bros competed in a match for the NXT Tag Team Championship in a losing effort. On the October 22 edition of NXT, Rawley and Ryder competed in a 26-man battle royal to determine the number one contender for the NXT Championship. Rawley and Ryder were unsuccessful, although they were among the last few competitors in the match. On the November 11 episode of NXT, The Hype Bros teamed up with Bayley during a six-person tag team match against Blake and Murphy and Alexa Bliss, where they emerged victorious, after Bayley attacked Murphy.[2]

On the February 10, 2016, episode of NXT, The Hype Bros defeated Corey Hollis and John Skyler.[3]

SmackDown (2016–2017)

In the WWE Draft on 19 July 2016, Rawley was drafted to SmackDown. At Battleground, Rawley saved his partner Ryder from a post-match beating by WWE United States Champion Rusev, officially uniting the Hype Bros on the main roster.[4] On the SummerSlam pre-show, The Hype Bros teamed with The Usos (Jimmy and Jey), and American Alpha to face The Vaudevillains (Aiden English and Simon Gotch), Breezango (Fandango and Tyler Breeze), and The Ascension (Konnor and Viktor) in a 12-man tag team match, where The Hype Bros' team was victorious. The Hype Bros entered the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship tournament, defeating The Vaudevillains in the first round before losing to Heath Slater and Rhyno in the semi-finals. At Backlash, The Hype Bros faced The Usos to qualify for the tournament final in a losing effort. At the No Mercy pay-per-view, The Hype Bros teamed with American Alpha to face The Ascension and The Vaudevillains in an eight-man tag team match, where The Hype Bros and American Alpha emerged victorious. On the October 25 episode of SmackDown, The Hype Bros defeated The Ascension to qualify as part of Team SmackDown for the 10–on–10 Survivor Series Tag Team Elimination match at Survivor Series in a losing effort. The Hype Bros were eliminated earlier within 5 minutes when Ryder was pinned following a Magic Killer from Gallows and Anderson.[5]On December 4 at the TLC: Tables Ladders and Chairs pre-show, The Hype Bros teamed with American Alpha and Apollo Crews to face The Ascension, The Vaudevillains and Curt Hawkins in a ten-man tag team match, where The Hype Bros, American Alpha and Crews were victorious.

On the December 13 episode of SmackDown, The Hype Bros competed in a tag-team battle royal to determine the #1 contenders for the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship. Despite Rawley being eliminated, Ryder would go on to win the battle royal for his team and become the #1 contenders. However, during the match, Ryder injured his knee and was seen using crutches backstage.[6] It was later reported that Ryder would be out of action for 4–9 months.

After six months of inactivity, Ryder returned on the June 13 edition of SmackDown, reuniting with Rawley. On June 18, at the Money in the Bank pre-show, The Hype Bros faced The Colons in a winning effort.[7] Two days later on SmackDown, Shane McMahon announced that The Hype Bros would have an opportunity to become number one contenders for the SmackDown Tag Team championship at the June 27 episode of SmackDown in a match against champions The Usos, in which they were defeated. On the September 12 edition of SmackDown, The Hype Bros lost to Chad Gable and Shelton Benjamin. After the match, Rawley shook hands with Benjamin and Gable, but Ryder simply walked away.

Throughout the next few weeks on SmackDown, Ryder and Rawley would shown signs of dissension as Rawley would constantly tag himself into matches, which ultimately caused them to lose when they began arguing. After yet another loss, Ryder and Rawley agreed to become more aggressive in the ring, but still weren't able to win matches. On the October 10 episode of SmackDown, The Hype Bros faced Benjamin and Gable, Breezango (Tyler Breeze and Fandango), and The Ascension (Konnor and Viktor) in a fatal four-way match to determine the number one contenders for The Usos' SmackDown Tag Team Championship, in which The Hype Bros were unable to win. On the October 23 episode of Raw, both were part of the SmackDown wrestlers that invaded Raw and attacked their wrestlers.

On the November 28 episode of SmackDown, after losing a tag team match to the Bludgeon Brothers, Rawley attacked Ryder, thus turning heel and disbanding The Hype Bros. They faced each other on Clash of Champions pre-show, with Rawley coming out victorious. The two then faced each other in the United States championship tournament with Rawley being victorious.
