The Hippos were an Australian blues band formed in Sydney in 1985.[1] The band released four albums in their time together until they folded in the 1990s.[2][3]

Band members

The original band members included:

  • Leszek (Lez) Karski - guitar, lead vocals. (Left to join the Bondi Cigars.)
  • John Power - bass, lead vocals.
  • Ace Follington - drums. (Left to join the Bondi Cigars.)
  • Ian Jones - saxophone, percussion, backing vocals.
  • Bridie King - keyboards, percussion, backing vocals.


Other musicians included:

  • David McBride - trombone. (Hippocracy)
  • Nigel Harris - trumpet. (Hippocracy)
  • Tim Reeves - drums.
  • Matt Morrison - drums.
  • Rory McKibbon - guitar.

  • Dark Age (single) (May, 1988) (WEA 7-258002) B-side was "Rodent Operative".[7] Entered at 45 on the ARIA Singles chart on September 11, 1988,[8][9] dropped out then re-entered at 49 a fortnight later,[10] went to 48 on October 2[11] then dropped out of the chart. A promotional video of the song was made at the Bridge Hotel in Sydney, NSW.
  • Breaking Up Somebody's Home (1988) (WEA 7-257885) B-side was "The Tiny Blues"
  • Time and Motion (single) (September, 1989) (WEA 7-257458) B-side was "Ded Fred"
