Season chronology

The third season of the fantasy comedy television series The Good Place, created by Michael Schur, was renewed on November 21, 2017, on NBC, and began airing on September 27, 2018, in the United States.[1][2] The season is produced by Fremulon, 3 Arts Entertainment, and Universal Television. The season will consist of thirteen episodes.

The series focuses on Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell), a deceased young woman who wakes up in the afterlife and is sent by Michael (Ted Danson) to "The Good Place", a heaven-like utopia he designed, in reward for her righteous life. However, she quickly realizes that she was sent there by mistake, and must hide her morally imperfect behavior (past and present). William Jackson Harper, Jameela Jamil, and Manny Jacinto co-star as other residents of the Good Place, together with D'Arcy Carden as an artificial being helping the inhabitants. Each of the episodes are listed as "Chapter (xx)" following the opening title card.

Cast

Main

  • Kristen Bell as Eleanor Shellstrop, a deceased saleswoman from Arizona who entered an afterlife utopia called "The Good Place" seemingly after being mistaken for a human rights lawyer by the same name.[3]
  • William Jackson Harper as Chidi Anagonye, a deceased ethics professor who was born in Nigeria and raised in Senegal. He is supposed to be the soulmate of "real Eleanor".[4]
  • Jameela Jamil as Tahani Al-Jamil, a deceased, wealthy philanthropist who traveled extensively around the world. She was born in Pakistan, raised in England, and went to school in France. Her full name means "Congratulations Beautiful".[5]
  • D'Arcy Carden as Janet, a programmed guide who acts as the neighborhood's main source of information, analogous to an intelligent personal assistant.[6] She is from the real Good Place, and throughout the series develops human-like characteristics that are unusual for a Janet.
  • Manny Jacinto as Jason Mendoza, a deceased DJ and small-time drug dealer from Florida who seemingly was mistaken for "Jianyu Li", a silent Buddhist monk from Taiwan and Tahani's alleged soulmate.[7]
  • Ted Danson as Michael, the architect of the titular "Good Place" neighbourhood that the other main characters inhabit. At the end of season 1, Eleanor deduced they were really all in the Bad Place and Michael was tricking them into torturing each other, at which points he wipes their memories to repeat the experiment.

Recurring

  • Marc Evan Jackson as Shawn, Michael's ex-boss in the Bad Place. He supports traditional torture and devotes his time to bringing the four back to the Bad Place.
  • Maya Rudolph as Judge Hydrogen (or "Gen" for short), an impartial inter-dimensional judge who rules on matters involving the Good Place and the Bad Place. Michael successfully convinces her to put the four humans back on Earth to test his theory that they can reform even after what happened.
  • Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Simone, a neuroscientist who befriends Chidi.
  • Mike O'Malley as the Doorman, the gatekeeper of the doorway between the afterlife and Earth.
  • Adam Scott as Trevor, a demon from the Bad Place sent to Earth by Shawn.

Judge Gen authorizes Michael to travel to Earth, where he saves Eleanor's, Chidi's, Jason's, and Tahani's lives, creating a new timeline, but strictly forbids any more interference. Michael and Janet monitor the humans, who reform for six months but eventually revert to their previous lifestyles. Chidi explores his brain health with a neuroscientist, Simone, but gives up decision after his coworker Henry is injured following Chidi's advice to lose weight. Michael returns to Earth to influence the humans to meet one another. He leads Eleanor to seek out Chidi, and primes Chidi to be willing to work with her; Chidi agrees to teach Eleanor about moral philosophy. Michael is concerned when Eleanor encourages Chidi to date Simone, but Janet reassures him that Chidi and Eleanor have connected meaningfully when they were not romantically involved. Shawn leads a Bad Place team that tries to hack into Gen's system; Michael's trips to Earth open a backdoor that Shawn's team exploits.

Chidi and Simone go on a date, and he kisses her after Eleanor protests his indecision. Chidi and Simone conceive a joint-study thesis to examine the effect of near-death experiences on brain function in ethical decision-making. Michael continues returning to Earth illicitly. Tahani finds enlightenment in a monastery, but returns to her fame-chasing ways after writing a bestselling book about the experience; Michael poses as a sleazy businessman who likens himself to Tahani, repulsing her, and she joins the study. Jason devotes himself to dance competitions and forbids his crew-mates from committing crimes, but returns to crime after the crew suffers continual failures; Michael tries to lure Jason to Australia to run a dance crew, only to find that Jason has already been soul-searching and wants to find a deeper meaning in life, and thus is easily convinced to participate in the study. Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, and Jason meet in Australia, but to Michael's dismay, the Bad Place sends Trevor to participate in the study.

Trevor interferes with the humans; he drives Chidi away from the others by suggesting that Chidi's friendship with the subjects threatens clinical results, and he steers Jason and Tahani into a meaningless hookup, all the while smothering the humans with overtures of friendship. Michael and Janet go to Earth yet again, attempting unsuccessfully to hinder Trevor; a panicked Michael attempts to eject Trevor from the study, while Janet must get objects physically instead of summoning them. Jason helps a drunk Tahani get home safely, but Eleanor leaves early, and she does not arrive for the next group meeting. Chidi, encouraged by Simone, affirms that he is Eleanor's friend, and she agrees to continue in the study. Judge Gen summons Michael, Janet, and back to the afterlife, where she hurls fawning Trevor into a void. She declares that the experiment is over; the humans must meet the normal threshold to get into the Good Place. Gen orders Michael and Janet to return to the Bad Place. Janet's powers return and begin summoning all the objects she wanted on Earth, which Michael takes advantage of to flee to Earth.

Michael and Janet, now stuck on Earth, are determined to keep the group together as they progress in the study, like having Eleanor find a lottery ticket with a winning $18000 than finding a job in Australia, and setting up Tahani on a blind date to keep her from dating Jason. As one year goes by, Tahani announces her engagement and prepares to leave for England before inviting the group to a party, ultimately prompting Chidi to consider replacing the group with new people. Michael intervenes to get Eleanor to want to stay, but Chidi believes that the group should move on. Eleanor does not take the rejection well and reverts to her former erratic behavior ruining Tahani’s party. Remorseful, Eleanor turns to Simone for help, stating that human behavior evolved from using selfishness as a tool to acquiring help from others. Since Eleanor lacked the bondage with other people prior to the study, her selfish behavior is reflective on her inability to socialize with and eventually lose her friends. Eleanor then apologizes to everyone and the group makes a pact that they meet once a year to keep taps on how each of them have become better people. A worrisome Michael fears the group breaking up will end his and Janet’s need to stay on Earth with nowhere to go. He attempts to return to the afterlife and change the timeline just as Eleanor, Chidi, Tahani, and Jason discover him and Janet about to enter the portal.
