In October 2014, it was announced that The Garden of Evening Mists would be adapted into a feature-length film by Malaysian film production company Astro Shaw in collaboration with HBO Asia and the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia.[2][3] There were rumours that Michelle Yeoh had been tipped to play protagonist Teoh Yun Ling in its early stages due to her interest in the book, according to an interview with Yeoh in Vogue Italia.[2] The screenplay was written by playwright Huzir Sulaiman, who had been known for his work in Dain Iskandar Said's controversial film Dukun.[4]

Taiwanese director Tom Lin was eventually chosen to helm the film while screenwriting positions had been taken over by Scottish BAFTA-winning screenwriter, Richard Smith; alongside a cast line-up starring Lee Sin-je, Hiroshi Abe, Sylvia Chang, David Oakes and John Hannah as confirmed on May 2018.[5][1]

Main production had kicked off as principal photography started by July 2018.[6]
