The Circle is a British reality television show, produced by Studio Lambert and Motion Content Group which launched on Channel 4 on 18 September 2018, the series aired for 21 days and concluded with the live final on 8 October 2018. The show bills itself as a game based around social media, with the concept that "anyone can be anyone in The Circle". It is hosted by Maya Jama and Alice Levine, and has been compared to Big Brother in format.[4][5]

The series was won by 26-year-old Internet comedian Alex Hobern, who had played the game claiming to be a 25-year-old woman called Kate, using photos of his real-life girlfriend Millie. Hobern also won the "viewers champion" for an additional £25,000, claiming £75,000 in total.

Format

The show's contestants, or "players", all move into a refurbished block of flats in London. However, the contestants will never meet face-to-face during the course of the competition, as they will each live in their own individual flat. They will communicate solely using their profiles on a specially-designed app, giving them the ability to portray themselves in any way they choose.[4][5][6]

Throughout the show, the contestants will "rate" one another based on who they like and dislike. The highest rated players will become "influencers", while all the rest of the players will be at risk to being chosen to be "blocked" (eliminated) by the influencers. After a player is blocked, they are given the opportunity to meet a fellow player in person. During the final, the contestants rate each other one final time, where the highest rated player wins the series and receives a £50,000 cash prize.[6][5] The viewers also get to choose their "viewers champion" out of the finalists, with the winner of this receiving £25,000.

Results and elimination

During a typical elimination, players are asked to rate each of their fellow players out of five. At the end of the ratings, the players are told their average scores in order from highest to lowest. The two players with the highest average score become the influencers, who must then decide which of the remaining players to "block" and therefore eliminate from the game. Once blocked, that player is given the opportunity to briefly meet one player still in the game.

Notes

  • ^Note 1 :In Episode 6, as Freddie and Genelle tied on their ratings they both joined Dan as influencers, also that day there was the first ever double blocking.
  • ^Note 2 :In Episode 10, although they were new players Hannah and Scotty were eligible to be rated and ultimately blocked from the game. Genelle also received a rating however this was not revealed as she walked from The Circle before the ratings were announced, her ratings for the players were still counted. Also for the first time there was no influencers as the player with the lowest rating was automatically blocked from the game.
  • ^Note 3 :In Episode 15, the bottom two players were at risk with the remaining players deciding who would be blocked.
  • ^Note 4 :In Episode 16, the top player was a super influencer. The ratings were not revealed.

International versions

On 9 October 2018, it was announced that three localised versions have been commissioned by Netflix for three different countries, including an American version of the show and two currently unannounced countries.[8][9][10][11][12]
