The Brilliance, stylized as the BRILLIANCE, is a band made up of David Gungor and John Arndt. They create spiritual protest music. They are based in New York City.

Background

Gungor and Arndt grew up together in Marshfield Wisconsin. Their music evolved over the years from liturgical art, to peacemaking protest music, to focusing on music that inspires empathy.[1] The band began in 2010 with Gungor in Tulsa, Oklahoma, leading worship services at a church, and Arndt coming from Austin, Texas.[2] The two would move their home bases to New York City for Gungor and Chicago for Arndt.[2] David Gungor is the brother of Michael Gungor.[2]

Music history

The duo started making music in 2010 and released a self-titled album, The Brilliance, on October 19, 2010.[3] They quickly followed it up with Advent, Vol. 1, on November 28, 2011.[4] In 2012, the duo released several albums. They released Lent, on February 29[5] Advent, Vol. 2 on November 12,[6] Cavetime - A Worship Experience, on November 23[7] and a live album titled The Road Recordings, a free download available via Noisetrade.[8] Subsequently, they made two more extended plays. They released Advent B Sides EP on December 2, 2013,[9] and the For Our Children EP, on December 2, 2014.[10]

This all caught the attention of Integrity Music, which released Brother, the duo's first studio album, on February 17, 2015.[11] The album charted on the Billboard Christian Albums chart at number 36.[12] On January 27, 2017, Integrity Music released All is Not Lost, garnering 4/5 stars from Jesus Freak Hideout, which called the album "epic." The album peaked at number 20 on Billboard's Christian Albums chart and number 12 on Billboard's Heatseeker's chart on February 18, 2017. [13]

The songs "God Our Mother" and "A Light" by the Brilliance were also been featured on the "God Our Mother"[14] and "A Light"[15] albums by The Liturgists.
