The Benham Brothers, identical twins David Benham and Jason Benham, are American authors, speakers, real estate entrepreneurs, and former Minor League Baseball players. In October 2014, the Benham Brothers were scheduled to premiere a reality television show about flipping houses; however, the show was scrapped by its broadcaster, HGTV, following a controversy regarding the Benhams' beliefs and public statements about same-sex marriage and abortion.

The Benham Brothers have co-authored three books: Whatever the Cost, Living Among Lions and Miracle in Shreveport. They are the founders of BENHAM Real Estate Group in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Benham Brothers are outspoken Christians.

David Benham

David Benham graduated from Liberty University.[1] He was drafted by the Boston Red Sox and played in both the Red Sox farm system and the St. Louis Cardinals farm system.[2] As of 2018, David and his wife, Lori, had five children and resided in Charlotte, North Carolina.[3]

Jason Benham

Jason Benham graduated from Liberty University in 1998[4] and obtained a master's degree from American Christian College in 2001. He was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles and later moved to the St. Louis Cardinals farm system.[5] Jason was named the third-most productive Realtor in the United States by The Wall Street Journal and Real Trends, Inc. after he closed 970 transactions in 2011.[6] As of 2018, Jason and his wife, Tori, had four children and resided in Charlotte, North Carolina.[7]

Business ventures

After finishing college, the Benham Brothers began working in real estate in Charlotte, North Carolina.[8] The brothers had had little success until a bank contacted them to work on a foreclosed home.[9] After the brothers fixed the home, the bank was impressed with their work and gave them many more jobs.[10] In 2003, they co-founded BENHAM Real Estate Group with a focus on bank listings and preparing foreclosed homes for resale.[11]

Missioneering

The Benham Brothers are outspoken about their Christian faith.[12] The Great Recession forced a significant number of Christian missionaries worldwide to leave their missionary activities due to significant shortfalls in charitable donations.[13] In 2010, the brothers created a concept termed 'Missioneering', to replace charitable giving as the primary source for missionary finance by leveraging a missionary's occupational skills to produce for-profit goods or services.[14] In 2014, the brothers' missioneering projects supported three missionaries in the Philippines by hiring and training 300 employees to offer business services and by opening two CrossFit gyms that served 500 members.[15]

Flip it Forward: HGTV

The Benham Brothers were scheduled to premiere their own reality television show in October 2014; however, the show was scrapped by its broadcaster, HGTV, before its premiere due to comments made by the Benhams regarding abortion and same-sex marriage.[16][17][18][19][20][21]

On April 18, 2014, HGTV announced it was planning on premiering a home improvement show called Flip It Forward hosted by the Benham Brothers in October 2014.[22] On May 6, 2014, Right Wing Watch released a post condemning HGTV's decision to have the brothers host the show because of their prior public statements opposing abortion[23] and same-sex marriage.[24] The following day, HGTV announced via a tweet that it would not move forward with the premiere of the Benham Brothers' series, thereby immediately cancelling the production in the middle of filming.[25] The brothers have stated that an untrue narrative was advanced to make them look hateful[26]; they blame a "gay agenda" for the network's decision.[27] Although their show was cancelled before airing, the Benham Brothers finished the house flip projects on the six Charlotte homes connected to the cancelled show.[28][29][30]
