Thaddeus Gustav Dixon[1] (born January 14, 1984), also known as The Music Man,[2] is an American record producer, songwriter, music director, music instructor and musician.[3] Dixon is most recently noted for co-producing and co-writing Meghan Trainor's certified platinum[4] single "Better When I'm Dancin'".[3] The song was recorded for The Peanuts Movie soundtrack.[3] Dixon has also produced for recording artists including Talib Kweli, Raekwon, Teedra Moses, Rick Ross, Deborah Cox and Timothy Bloom among others.[5][6]

Accompanying his production credits, Dixon has worked as a music director and or drummer for Ne-Yo, Deitrick Haddon, Keyshia Cole, Roy Hargrove, Meghan Trainor, Bryson Tiller, Adam Lambert, Cody Simpson and other accomplished artists.[2][7] He has been featured on TV shows such as MTV's Making His Band, Good Morning America, The TODAY Show, Live! with Kelly, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Late Night with Seth Meyers.[2] In addition, Dixon has performed at the White House and Carnegie Hall.[2]

Early life and education

Dixon was born in Detroit, Michigan, the only child of Gus and Denise Dixon.[8] He began playing drums at the early age of 4 years old and honed his skills as a church musician.[9][10] He attended Detroit High School for Fine & Performing Arts and played at local concerts for gospel artists such as Kirk Franklin.[8][2]

After graduating high school, Dixon moved to East Lansing, Michigan to attend Michigan State University (MSU) on a jazz studies scholarship.[3] He was recruited by MSU jazz studies director, Rodney Whitaker who lauded Dixon for having "the stuff you can't teach."[8] Dixon's natural drumming talent afforded him the opportunity to take on professional gigs while pursuing his degree.[8] He graduated in 2006 with a Bachelor of Music.[3]

Career

2006-09: The up-and-coming drummer

Dixon began his professional career as a touring drummer with The Spinners.[8] Thereafter, he continued to perform with artists across musical genres such as Ne-Yo, Sean Kingston, Mulgrew Miller, Roy Hargrove and Steve Nelson.[2][8]

2009-12: Respect & reality

Dixon appeared on MTV's "Making His Band", a reality TV show where musicians competed for coveted spots in entertainment mogul Sean Combs's touring band.[8] Dixon was a drum finalist, however another musician was ultimately selected.[8] Motivated by his overall experience and the respect earned from music industry veterans, Dixon founded A-list Music & Co., a music entertainment company.[8][11] He worked with acts such as Bone Thugs-n-Harmony, Deitrick Haddon, Dawn Richard and Timothy Bloom.[8][5] He also performed with his own jazz ensemble, The Thaddeus Dixon Quartet.[8] Dixon then relocated to Berkeley to work as an instructor in the music department at the University of California, Berkeley for two years.[3][10]

2012-16: Follow the band leader

Dixon's strong reputation as a touring drummer set the stage for his career advancement to music director for recording artist Cody Simpson.[12] Dixon later managed music direction for Meghan Trainor's "That Bass Tour" and Bryson Tiller's "TRAPSOUL Tour".[10][13] Concurrently, Dixon focused on broadening his repertoire as a record producer. He produced music for entertainers such as Meghan Trainor, Talib Kweli, Raekwon, Teedra Moses, Rick Ross, Deborah Cox and Timothy Bloom among others.[5][6]

2016-Present: Producer with a business plan

Thaddeus Dixon's musicianship on and offstage continues to be in high demand within the music entertainment industry.[2] In turn, his company A-list Music & Co. expanded its operations by opening a studio in Los Angeles, California.[11] Dixon provides services in music direction, record production and studio rental space.[11] Recent music direction projects include Brent Faiyaz's "Sonder Son Tour" and Khalid's "Location Tour".[14] Dixon also created music for E! Network reality TV programming.[11] In addition, he produced and released "All About You" feat. Timothy Bloom and Talib Kweli as well as "I Still Love You" by MÄDA feat. Dreezy.[15][16]
