Tenacious D in Post-Apocalypto is an American illustrated episode series by Jack Black and Kyle Gass as Tenacious D. It was released exclusively on YouTube.

Production

In August 2012, Black announced on the WTF with Marc Maron podcast that the band were interested in creating an Internet series. The band would reference the project in interviews throughout 2012 and 2013.[1]

It is unknown when the project officially broke ground, but the band were heavily influenced by the Donald Trump presidential campaign, 2016 - with Black stating the Trump's announcement for the presidency inspired the post-apocalyptic storyline.[2]

The project was assembled by Black physically drawing each frame with markers and notepads - with longtime Tenacious D bassist and producer John Spiker scanning and digitalizing the images. Michael Molina would add color later on in the progress.[3]

In December 2017 whilst on Kerrang Radio promoting Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Black stated that the title of the animated series would be called Tenacious D in Post-Apocalypto.[4]

On May 6th 2018, during Tenacious D's performance at the Shaky Knees Music Festival, Black asked the audience if anyone had seen Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny, and that "part two is coming out in October... I don't know where you'll be able to see it, but we've decided it's happening and it's coming out, Rocktober". These comments referencing the series.[5]

Black and Gass pitched the series to Netflix, HBO Go and Amazon Prime Video for distribution, but it was rejected.[6]

Release

On May 15th, 2018, the band released a few seconds of their show in the form of a trailer to promote their tour in the fall of the year.[7] On September 4th, it was announced that the series would be released on YouTube, with the first episode coming out on the 28th of September. A new episode will release every Friday from then until November 2nd - to mark the release of the Post-Apocalypto album and the subsequent tour.[8]

The entire series was screened at the LA Film Festival on September 24, 2018 and the Fantastic Fest on September 25, 2018.[9]

The second episode was removed from YouTube shortly after being uploaded on the 5th of October for its sexual content. It was unblocked and had an age-restriction placed on it shortly after.[10]
