Talış (Armenian: Թալիշ, T'alish) is a village in the Martakert Region of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (de facto), and the Tartar Rayon of Azerbaijan (de jure). It has been under Armenian control since the 1994 ceasefire.

History

After an Azeri attack on the Armenian village of Tonashen was repulsed with several casualties by Armenians, the Armenians advanced and took Talış on April 11, 1994, also securing the village of Gulistan.[1]

The village was severely damaged during the 2016 Armenian–Azerbaijani clashes. Azerbaijan's armed forces briefly took control over the village on the 2nd of April 2016 after most of its population had been evacuated.[2][3]

Following the 2016 clashes, according to Azerbaijanis, Azerbaijan regained control over all heights around Talış.[4][5] However the Armenian side says Azerbaijan regained control over some military posts but not succeed to occupy all heights around Talış [6][7][8][9][10] Its population, which numbered 567 persons in 2005 according to Armenian sources,[11] fled, and it is currently a ghost village.[12]
