TNT N.V. was an international express, mail delivery and logistics services company with headquarters in Hoofddorp, Netherlands. TNT operated the Dutch national postal service under the name TNT Post. The group also offered postal services in eight other European countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy and Belgium. TNT's mail division recorded sales of about €4.2 billion in 2009.

TNT sold its logistics unit in November 2006 to focus on network activities, mail and express delivery services. TNT's networks were concentrated in Europe and Asia, but the group also had operations in the Middle East and South America, and several road freight companies in China, India and Brazil.

On 2 August 2010, TNT N.V. announced its intention to split up into two independent companies, an express and a mail company. The demerger became effective in May 2011: TNT Express was listed on the Amsterdam stock exchange, and TNT N.V. subsequently renamed itself PostNL. TNT N.V. was officially quoted on the Euronext Amsterdam Stock Exchange, until May 2011.

TNT employed 155,000 people. Over 2009, TNT reported €10.4 billion in revenues and an operating income of €648 million. Its major competitors included FedEx, DHL, and national post carriers such as US Postal Service and Royal Mail. TNT's last chief executive officer was Peter Bakker.

Other members of the Board of Management included Bernard Bot (Chief Financial Officer), Marie-Christine Lombard (Group Managing Director, Express) and Harry Koorstra (Group Managing Director, Mail).

History

  • 1752 to 1799 – Establishment of Statenpost, which secured a national monopoly. Services were reorganised into a single national enterprise based on the French postal system.
  • 1852 – First Dutch postage stamp was issued.
  • 1931 – Mechanisation of the Dutch postal system.
  • 1946 – TNT (Thomas Nationwide Transport) was founded in Australia.
  • 1961 – TNT was listed on the Sydney Stock Exchange.
  • 1977 – Introduction of post codes in the Netherlands, which allowed full automation of the postal system.
  • 1989 – The national Dutch post & telecommunications company is privatised and renamed PTT Nederland.
  • 1992 – TNT is acquired by Canada Post and a consortium of European postal companies.
  • 1994 – Under the name of KPN, PTT Nederland is listed on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange.
  • 1996 – KPN makes a friendly takeover of TNT. TNT is subsequently delisted from the ASX.
  • 1998 – KPN's postal division is demerged and combined with TNT, then listed separately on the Amsterdam Stock Exchange as TPG (TNT Post Group). TPG opens its European Express Centre in Liège Airport (Liege, Belgium). An international road hub is opened in Duiven, Netherlands. TPG acquires Jet Services of France and integrates it with their European operations.
  • 1999 to 2005 – TPG moves into the logistics market with the acquisition of several international logistics companies.
  • 2005 – TPG renames itself to TNT and announces its plan to sell off the majority of its logistics division.
  • November 2006 – TNT sells its Logistics division to Apollo Management. The unit has been renamed Ceva Logistics since then.
  • December 2006 and May 2007 – TNT takes delivery of its first two Boeing 747-400ERF.
  • March 2007 – TNT acquires Hoau, China's private freight and parcels delivery firm.[2]
  • May 2007 – TNT announces its delisting from the New York Stock Exchange.
  • August 2007 – TNT announces a program to cut carbon emissions called "Planet Me".
  • May 2011 – A general meeting confirms a demerger of TNT Express and name change of TNT N.V. to PostNL N.V.[3]

  • TNT Express – operated the largest express network by air and road in Europe, as well as TNT Airways, an international cargo airline. TNT Express employed more than 78,000 people, flew 48 aircraft, ran about 26,000 road vehicles, and had a worldwide network of more than 2,400 depots and hubs.

  • TNT Business Solutions – offered a range of Business Process Outsourcing services e.g. information management, records management, facilities management and supplier management
  • TNT Fashion Group – operated delivery services focused on fashion retailers.
