MS Symphony of the Seas is an Oasis-class cruise ship owned and operated by Royal Caribbean International.[8] As of 9 June 2017, she is the largest passenger ship in the world by gross tonnage, at 228,021 GT, surpassing her sister Harmony of the Seas.[9]

Symphony of the Seas was built in the Chantiers de l'Atlantique shipyard in Saint Nazaire, France.[10] She is the fourth ship in its Oasis-class series.[11]

Construction timeline

  • 29 October 2015 – keel laid[3]
  • 9 June 2017 – float out[12]
  • 15 to 18 February 2018 – sea trials[13]
  • 23 March 2018 – formally turned over to Royal Caribbean International [7]
  • 24 March 2018 – ship left Saint-Nazaire for Malaga under the command of Rob Hempstead, arriving on 27 March[14][15]
  • 29 March 2018 – ship arrived in first homeport of Barcelona [15]
  • 31 March 2018 – first passenger cruise[5]
  • 7 April 2018 – official maiden voyage[16]

Description

Symphony of the Seas measures 1,188 feet (362 m) in length and has a gross tonnage of 228,081 across 18 decks. She is able to accommodate 5,518 passengers at double occupancy up to a maximum capacity of 6,680 passengers, as well as a 2,200-person crew.[6]

Facilities include a children's water park, a full-size basketball court, ice-skating rink, and two 43-foot rock-climbing walls.[17][18] There is also a 'central park' which contains over 20,000 tropical plants.[19]

Alexa, Carlos and Ocean PenaVega were chosen as the Godfamily of the ship, a first for the cruise industry.[20] The christening ceremony will take place in Miami in November 2018.[21]

Route

During her first season Symphony of the Seas will sail from Barcelona, Spain, on seven-night Western Mediterranean cruises. On 28 October 2018, she will reposition to her home port, the Port of Miami in Florida, United States. In November 2018, she will begin Caribbean cruises.[22]

When Symphony of the Seas arrives in Miami, she will sail an Eastern Caribbean itinerary from Miami to Philipsburg, Sint Maarten; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Labadee, Haiti.[23] She will also sail on a Western Caribbean itinerary to Roatán, Honduras; Costa Maya, Mexico; Cozumel, Mexico; and Nassau, Bahamas.[24]
