Svatove (Ukrainian: Сватове, Russian: Сватово) is a city in Luhansk Oblast (region) of Ukraine. It serves as the administrative center of Svatove Raion. Population: 18,241(2013 est.)[1].

History

Contemporary history

After the proclamation of the separatist Luhansk People's Republic on 27 April 2014, Luhansk Oblast became a battlefield of the War in Donbass.[2] Svatove stayed under Ukrainian governmental control.[3] The separatist referendum on 11 May on independence was not held in the city.[4]

Due to the War in Donbass the University of Luhansk was evacuated to Starobilsk in 2014.[5] Adding 10,000 students to the town.[6]

On 29–30 October 2015, four Ukrainian servicemen were injured and one soldier was killed as a result of explosions caused by fire at the munitions depot in Svatove.[7][8][9]
