Suzanne Côté (born September 21, 1958) is a puisne justice of the Supreme Court of Canada.[1] She was nominated by Prime Minister Stephen Harper to replace retiring justice Louis LeBel.[2] Prior to being appointed to the Supreme Court, she was a partner at Osler, Hoskin & Harcourt LLP[2] and previously Stikeman Elliott LLP in Montréal.[3] She is the first woman appointed directly from private practice.[4] Côté did her legal studies at Laval University, and has taught courses at University of Montréal and the Université du Québec à Rimouski.[5]

Early life

She has wanted to be a lawyer since age 11.[6] While her mother wanted her to become a teacher, young Suzanne enjoyed reading about high profile legal cases.[6]

Personal life

Côté is married to Gerald R. Tremblay, who is also a lawyer practicing in the province of Quebec.
