Background

Recently, in 2018, the giants from the Surat Diamond industry gathered and have conceived the project of accommodating all the diamond merchants and manufacturers under one roof so as to increase the profitability for all, by minimizing the transportation time and collaborating different units, which so far were scattered into small units. For the same, they step-by-step united all those associated with the industry, and later approached the government with this gargantuan project, which was carefully calibrated and propelled with plans and layouts. With the Government approval, the project is spaced at the heart of DREAM City project. It is expected to be operational by 2020.

Six decades ago, Surat diamond industry started with very rudimentary tools and techniques, which now incorporates the most sophisticated and advanced technology for the process. Such advancement, has made this market, the producer of more than 90% of world’s processed diamonds. Further, Surat is also home to International Institute of Diamond Grading and Research (IIDGR) owned by De Beers. Adding to the existing fame of Surat, is the DREAM (Diamond Research And Mercantile) city project, is now undertaken by the Government of Gujarat, planning to be developed in 2000 acres near Khajod (Surat), availing various residential and commercial spaces for business owners and employees in this industry.

Prospects

Surat Diamond Bourse’s proposed humongous 66 lakh Sq.ft. facility, built with the investment of over INR 2400 Crore, is planned to have 9 iconic towers consisting G+15 floors each. It has been planned intelligently, to accommodate around 67000+ professionals, availing offices varying in sizes from 300 sq ft to 25000 sq ft which will have over 4200 diamond merchant offices, all of which will be approximately 4 minutes away from the security gate. It’ll have around 1.5 km walk per floor with overall interconnected walkway being approximately 22 km. It will also embrace in itself Conference halls, Health club, Banquets, and Restaurants for all along with proposed allied facilities for Custom office, Banking Facilities, Diamond-Testing Lab, Auction House, Safe Deposit Vaults and so on, all. All the offices and spaces will be protected through advanced security measures. Also taking care of the connectivity for the travelers, these facilities will be situated only 5 km away from the airport. Such an elaborate project is expected to increase the profitability by leaps and bounces for all the fellow members from the industry, regardless of their capacity.
