Su-ngai Kolok (Thai: สุไหงโกลก, Malay: Sungai Golok) is a border town on the Malaysia-Thailand Border in Narathiwat Province, Thailand.It is one of the largest and most prosperous districts in Narathiwat province. It is also one of the major economic centers in the southern part of Thailand. It is the capital of the Su-ngai Kolok District. As of 2005, the town (thesaban mueang) had a population of 38,612. Across the border is Rantau Panjang, Kelantan, Malaysia.

Location and territory

Su-ngai Kolok is located in the south-eastern part of the province. The territory adjacent to the neighboring areas as follows. North contact with Su-ngai Padi and Tak Bai. East contact with Kelantan (Malaysia) South contact with Kelantan (Malaysia) and Wan West contact with Su-ngai Padi

Etymology

The word "su-ngai" is Malay and means "river". "Golok" is also Malay and Indonesian and means "traditional sword". Therefore, Su-ngai Golok means 'sword river'.

History

SungaiKolok - The original is a wilderness in Puyo area, Su-ngai Padi district. The dense forest makes the villagers called. "Chantulee forest" means that it is so dense that it can not be heard as a deaf ear. From the name of the forest is changed to SungaiKolok

By the year 2460, paving the way to build a railway link to Kelantan state by setting up a railway station in the forest area. Next is the railway station. It is the last station in Thailand that has the longest distance. The people of Puyo seen far away have begun to land. Some are allowed to make rubber plantations, but no houses have been built yet. The communities that Puyo people deal with trade are only run by tantamounts of Kelantan, where the people live and work as traders. The township was upgraded to town (thesaban mueang) status on 20 February 2004.

At present, the district is prosperous and is the economic center of the Lower South. It has the largest eastern border trade center. It is the center of trade of goods from neighboring countries. And is the hub of tourist arrivals from Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. The entrance to the outpost of a hundred thousand people over a hundred thousand years.[1]
