Srimathi Sundravalli Memorial School

Srimathi Sundaravalli Memorial School (or SSM) is located in Nagappa Nagar, Chrompet, Chennai, India.A second school was started in perungaluthur in 2012 which now hosts class PreKG to 12. It is located 13 km from the main school. The school follows CBSE standard of education. The school is named after Smt. Sundaravalli, mother of the founder Mr. K. Santhanam.

The school was inaugurated on 11 June 1986 by the educationist the late Kulapathi Dr. Balakrishna Joshi in the presence of His Holiness Sri Varadha Ethiraja Jeer Swami of Sriperumbudur. It is a co-educational school, with classes from preschool to 12, and is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education, New Delhi.

This school celebrated its silver jubilee in 2010. It is connected with Sarada Secondary School.

The school trains the students in fine arts: keyboard, vocal, mridangam, veena, photography, bharatanatyam, violin and arts and crafts. There are four periods in a week for every class in which they are taken to the sports complex for sports and swimming. The swimming pools are school property . There is a wading pool and a large pool of depths ranging from 4 feet to 10 feet. There are field trips frequently and a tour to one place each year, and the grade 12 students are taken to Singapore for their educational tour.

Controversy

On July 20th 2018, more than 700 parents protested outside the premises of Perungalathur campus stating that the school had asked them to pay a caution deposit of Indian Rupees 2,00,000

The school asked parents to communicate their decision of payment before July 31 2018 and said that those who did not wish to pay could pull their children out of the school at the end of the year. The transfer certificate (TC) would be issued to such students at the end of the current academic year. The information sought was required for the management to make the necessary arrangements for the next academic year, the communication said.

The management had earlier constructed a senior citizen friendly society besides the school complex of which many of the apartments went unsold.

The sports meet is held every year. Students can participate in athletics, basketball, volleyball, football, Kho — Kho, shot put, javelin, long jump, and swimming.

Computer Center

The school has a computer center with 60 computers.

Uniform

Uniform is navy blue in color. The shirt is of striped pattern. All boys who are studying in classes 3-6 wear a shirt and a trouser. Girls who are studying in classes 3-6 wear shirt and skirt. From class 7, boys wear a shirt and a full pant, while girls wear chudidhar.

Educational tours

An annual educational tour for students of Classes VI to XII is a part of the curriculum.

Notable alumni

Bhargav Narasimhan is a speedcuber. He holds the Asian record for solving a 3x3 Cube one handed in 9.52 seconds. He also holds national records for 2x2 cube, 3x3 one handed and megaminx. On 1 March 2015 he achieved the Guinness World Records by solving 5 Rubik's cube in 1:23:934 minutes using one hand. He broke the previous record by Yumu Tabuchi of Japan, on 15 March 2010 who did it in 1 min 52.46 sec.
