Leto (Russian: Лето, translit. Leto, lit. ''Summer'') is a 2018 Russian biographical film directed by Kirill Serebrennikov. It depicts the youth of Viktor Tsoi and the Leningrad underground rock culture of the early 1980s. Tsoi is played by Korean actor Teo Yoo.[1][2] It was selected to compete for the Palme d'Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.[3][4][5]

Plot

The plot is based on little-known facts of Viktor Tsoi's (Teo Yoo) life and unfolds in the summer of the early 1980s in Leningrad. The main storyline of the film tells the story of the relationship between the 19-year-old Tsoi, 26-year-old Mike Naumenko (Roman Bilyk), and his wife Natalia (Irina Starshenbaum), as well as the formation of the Leningrad Rock Club and the recording of Tsoi's first album, 45.[6]

Cast

Production

Filming began in July 2017 in St. Petersburg[10][11] and continued until the end of August, when Serebrennikov was arrested and deported to Moscow on charges of fraud, and then placed under house arrest.[12] Nevertheless, by February 2018 he managed to finish the film without violating the prohibitions imposed by the court, as he finished his work using a computer not connected to the internet. A few unfinished scenes were finished using his notes and based on previous rehearsals.[13]

The 2 February 2018 edition of Variety showed the first stills from the film.[14][15]

Music

The film featured the music of the band Kino and other Russian rock bands.[10] Leto won Cannes Soundtrack Award.[16]

Reception

Critical response

On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 59%, based on 17 reviews with an average rating of 6/10.[17] Metacritic gives the film a weighted average score of 69 out of 100, based on 11 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[18]

Music community

On 15 February 2018, the film was criticized by musician Boris Grebenshchikov, who felt that the script of the film was "a lie from beginning to end."

We lived differently. In his scenario, we're Moscow hipsters, who don't know how to do anything apart from copulating on someone else's account. The script was written by a man from another planet. I think that, in those days, the script writer would have worked for the KGB.

Boris Grebenschikov[19]

Alexei Rybin, one of the founders of Kino, also criticized the script, as well as forbidding the authors to use his image in the film.[20] The film was sharply criticized by the music producer Andrei Tropillo, who described the director Serebrennikov as "a man alien to rock culture and who knows nothing about it".[21] Music critic Artemy Troitsky agreed that the script "causes great doubts", but urged people to wait for the finished film.[22]
