Sudipto Das (born 12 July 1973) is an Indian author, IT professional and musician.[1] He is also a columnist,[2][3] a speaker at TED events[4][5] and a veteran in the semiconductor industry[6] who takes a deep interest in Internet Of Things and AI. He is the co-founder of two startup companies,[7] Mindlance Technologies and Insilico.[8][9]

Das has written two novels: The Ekkos Clan, released in 2013, and The Aryabhata Clan, released in 2018. He has also published the coffee table book Myths & Truths Behind The Ekkos Clan,[10] released in April 2014. Within a fortnight of its release The Ekkos Clan came to 3rd position[11] in the best seller list in Flipkart in the Literature and Fiction section.

Sudipto, an alumnus of IIT Kharagpur, has been a secretary at the Sarathi Socio Cultural Trust for many years,[12] looking after their cultural initiatives in Bangalore.[13][14][15] Presently he is the General Secretary of Sarathi.[16]

Early days

Sudipto was born in Calcutta to a family which fled Bangladesh during the partition riots of 1947.[17] He grew up listening to horrid stories of the partition, something which he has used extensively in his debut novel The Ekkos Clan. He completed his engineering from IIT Kharagpur in 1996.

Having started his professional career in 1996 at Noida, he moved to Bangalore in 1997. He has been living in Bangalore ever since.

A violinist, trained in Western classical music, Sudipto started writing short stories and poems in Bengali and English while he was in IIT Kharagpur, where he also served as the Governor of Technology Music Society, Eastern (ETMS) in 1995–96.

Music

Sudipto started the music band Kohal in Bangalore in 2007[1] with some of the members of ETMS.

In May 2014 he tried his hand at creating background scores for a play,[18] directed by Sharmin Ali, where he used only Mozart's compositions for the entire score. In the same year he recreated Eastern European melodies of the 1940s for the Forum Three[19] War Musical Schweyk in the Second World War by Bertolt Brecht,[20][21] which was staged many times in Bangalore and once in Auroville for an international audience.[22][23]

In 2018 he composed the theme music of Blooming Orchard,[24] the English adaptation of Manoj Mitra's Bengali play Sajano Bagan.

Kohal have performed some of Sudipto's original compositions in their shows.

Business interests

In June 2017 Sudipto co-founded Insilico,[9] which was adjudged one of the Top 10 most disruptive and potentially game-changing startups in the electrical and electronics sector[25] by the "ELECRAMA Startup Awards 2018",[9] for its AI enabled IoT based Smart Lighting solution.[26]

Novels

The Ekkos Clan

Das began working on his first novel, The Ekkos Clan, in 2008,[17] and it was launched in Bangalore on 3 August 2013.[27] A contemporary mystery novel set against the backdrop of ancient Indian history. The book deals extensively with linguistic palaeontology, Astronomy, Archaeology, History, Music and Poetry. Another book, The Myths & Truths Behind The Ekkos Clan, is a compilation of historical and linguistic facts and figures which loosely form the background of Sudipto Das' debut novel, The Ekkos Clan. Das presents a series of discoveries and theories, espoused by a particular school of historians and linguists, which are used as historical background in the novel.[28]

Das plans a trilogy with Afsar-Kratu-Tista and linguistic palaeontology. In The Aryabhata Clan, the sequel to The Ekkos Clan, he concentrates on the mathematician Aryabhata.[29] The Aryabhata Clan was released in December 2017.[30]

Future works

In various interviews,[31][32] given between September and December 2013, Sudipto mentioned that he had already completed the first draft of a book, Prembajar (working title), which wouldn't be a sequel of The Ekkos Clan. "My yearning to make my alma mater IIT Kharagpur (KGP) a part of my literary creation is so strong that I want to write a KGP trilogy too, a set of three unusual love stories, all originating in KGP," he said.

Sudipto's third novel, The Broken Amoretti, set against the backdrop of IIT Kharagpur and a nondescript place called Prembajar, which lies just outside the IIT campus, will be published soon by Niyogi Books. Totally different from Sudipto's earlier two thrillers, this one, co-written with Aparajita Dutta, "has a bold theme, a much-needed voice to the many unconventional relationships that have been silenced since ages".[33][25]
