Stichius is a spider genus of the Salticidae family (jumping spiders). Its only described species, Stichius albomaculatus, was found in Sumatra.
The species was initially described by Tamerlan Thorell in 1890 on the basis of a single juvenile female. An adult male specimen was identified by Thorell as the same species.[2] A drawing of the palpal bulb of this male was published by Jerzy Prószyński in 1984.[3] When the male specimen was re-examined in 2001 by Dmitri V. Logunov, it was considered to be Bianor incitatus.[2] Until the female specimen (the holotype) is re-examined, Logonov considers Stichius albomaculatus to be a nomen dubium (doubtful name) and the taxonomic status of the genus Stichius to be unclear.[2]
The generic name is taken from Greek mythology (Στιχίος, a commander of the Athenians in the Trojan war in Homer's Iliad).
