Steve Hanft

Steven Hanft is a film and video director.

Early life

Steven Hanft was born in Ventura, California where he started making films at age eleven.

He studied film at CalArts[1], where he made his first feature film, Kill the Moonlight.

Career

While making Kill the Moonlight, Hanft befriended musician Beck, who was very interested in the movie. He later sampled portions of the film for his hit single "Loser", which Hanft also directed the video for.[2] Hanft has directed several hit music videos, including the MTV award winner, "Where It's At", by Beck.[3]

In 2003, Hanft released his second feature film Southlander, a surreal adventure about an indie-rock keyboard player. The film, featuring cameos by Beck, Hank Williams III, and the late Billy Higgins and Elliott Smith, was shot in only a few weeks as a result of the production company, Propaganda Films, going bankrupt.[4] In 2008, he released his third feature film, a music documentary Return of the Rub-a-Dub Style, about the original sound system reggae artists performing in Los Angeles. The film screened at Anthology Film Archive in New York, and Don't Knock the Rock Film Festival, in Los Angeles[5], and was released to DVD in 2011.[6] It is currently available to purchase on the official Stones Throw Records website.[7]

Recently, Steven directed music videos for Carmen Electra, and Prince Jazzbo.[8][9] He also produced and starred in the Cannes Film Festival award winning short film Sunglass Catch, rated by Business Insider as the 4th most important YouTube video ever.[10]
