Stepchildren of Society

Stepchildren of Society is a Swedish NGO for adult persons who as children were taken into custody by society and placed in orphanages and foster homes. The organisation were founded in 2004, and its full name is National Association for Stepchildren of Society (in Swedish: Riksförbundet för Samhällets Styvbarn). Stepchildren of Society has three main areas of activities:

  • reciprocal support among all stepchildren of society
  • redress to those who were exposed to abuse or negligence within the frames of society’s child care
  • surveillance of today’s child policy concerning custody measures from the side of society.

Stepchildren of Society co-operated with the 2006 state inquiry reviewing abuse and negligence within the social authorities’ childcare.[1] The activities of the association are built upon democratic values and human rights as shown in Swedish constitution and international conventions for human rights, i.e. Convention on the Rights of the Child, Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and European Convention on Human Rights. Since 2008 a news letter is published, Styvbarnen informerar.[2] President since 2014 is Robert Wahlström.
