The Gus A. Stavros Institute is an organization founded by Gus A. Stavros in 1989.[1] Located in Clearwater in Pinellas County, Florida, the institute is partnered with the Pinellas Education Foundation to run the Enterprise Village and Finance Park educational programs.

Programs

Enterprise Village

In collaboration with the Pinellas Education Foundation, the Stavros Institute helps run Enterprise Village and Finance Park, two hands-on business-oriented educational programs. Enterprise Village, established in 1989, is designed for fifth-grade students.[2] After six weeks of in-classroom learning, fifth-grade students at participating Pinellas County schools visit Enterprise Village, an indoor set of various artificial stores, where they learn to write checks, use debit cards, and apply for and work in mock-up jobs at partnered companies like McDonald's, CVS Pharmacy, and Bank of America.[3] During their breaks, the students become consumers, being able to walk around the other stores and buy items with the artificial money they received from working at their jobs.[4]

Finance Park

Finance Park is the eighth-grade equivalent of Enterprise Village, with a focus on understanding insurance, along with budgeting transportation, healthcare, entertainment, utilities, and other expenses.[2][5][6][7] Students participating at Finance Park are challenged to pay all of their bills and balance their checkbooks by the end of their visit.[4]
