The Statue of Equality is an upcoming project dedicated to the 11th century Vaishnavaite Saint Bhagavad Ramanuja, commemorating 1000 years since his birth.[1] Ramanuja was an icon treating every one as equal before God and was the first to allow the downtrodden to enter temples.[2] Taking his inspiration this project was named "Statue of Equality".

The project is constructed on an estimated 34 acres. It consists of a 216 foot tall statue of Ramanuja and is surrounded by 108 Divyadesams (model temples). This project was planned by religious guru Chinna Jeeyar swamy and his religious trust. This project budget is 1000 crore rupees. After completion Statue of Equality would be the world's second tallest sitting statue after Great Buddha of Thailand, Thailand which is of 302 feet height.[3][4][5]

Outreach

The foundation stone for the Statue of Equality was laid by Chinna Jeeyar in the presence of many people. The contract of building the statue was given to a Chinese company. The funds were raised by many people. For raising funds, programs like music fests, cricket tournaments, bike and car rallies and marathons were conducted.[6]

Significance of Ramanuja

  • He made temple authorities allow oppressed and downtrodden people into temples.[6]
  • Said that he is prepared to be punished if the world gets rid of pain on account of him.[6]
  • Of late, this society gets destroyed by tension and terrorism.[6] This statue of Ramanuja will help remind us that we are all equal.[6]
  • The Acharya of Lord Venkateshwara, by giving the Sankhu and Chakra to him.[7]

Project

"Statue of Equality" is to be constructed in 3 phases as mentioned below.

  • Phase 1: Construction of a 216 foot tall Ramanuja statue
  • Phase 2: Construction of 108 Divya Desams (model temples)
  • Phase 3: A depiction of Ramanuja's life story and incidents

Design

Statue of Equality is constructed on a base building which will be 54 feet tall. The base will contain a meditation hall where a small statue of Ramunuja made of 120 kg of gold will be installed.

Around the statue, 108 Divya Desams (model temples) will be constructed in stone. An Omnimax theatre featuring the life stories of Ramanuja and a library of ancient Indian texts are also planned.[8]
