Star Wars: Tarkin is a Star Wars novel by James Luceno, published in November 2014. Set between the films Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, it follows the rise of the character Grand Moff Tarkin. Tarkin was one of the first four novels published in the franchise after Lucasfilm redefined Star Wars continuity in April 2014.
Overview
Tarkin chronicles how Wilhuff Tarkin meets and aligns himself with Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader as the nascent Galactic Empire rises to power, prior to the events of A New Hope, and explores Tarkin's origins.[1]
Publication
With the 2012 acquisition of Lucasfilm by The Walt Disney Company, most of the licensed Star Wars novels and comics produced since the originating 1977 film Star Wars were rebranded as Star Wars Legends and declared non-canon to the franchise in April 2014.[2][3][4] Tarkin was subsequently announced as one of the first four canon novels to be released in 2014 and 2015.[4]
In other media
- Fondor, a planet that is mentioned in the novel, appears in the 2017 sequel to the Star Wars Battlefront reboot video game, Star Wars Battlefront II.[5]
- The Executrix, Tarkin's personal Star Destroyer, which first appeared in this novel, prominently appeared in the 2016 film Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, where it takes part in the final stages of the Death Star's construction.[6] The Executrix also became one of four unlockable capital ships in the mobile role-playing game Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes that can be used to lead ship battles, a feature that was added to celebrate the game's first anniversary.[7]
