Stairwell Theater is an experimental theatre company founded in 2014 and based in New York City.

Founding and history

Founded in 2014 by L.A.M.D.A graduates, Sam Gibbs and Ellyn Heald, the company staged its first production, As You Like It, at the Prospect Park Pagoda and Standard Toykraft, Williamsburg, in May, 2015.[1] The shows at the Prospect Park Pagoda were free of charge,[2] following in the tradition of Gibbs' previous theater company, Free Theatre.[3]

In 2015, the company was granted Fractured Atlas, non-profit, fiscal sponsorship.[4]

In December 2015, Stairwell Theater staged Ubu Rex, an immersive cabaret production based on the 19th-century play Ubu Roi, at the DIY punk rock venue Aviv, Greenpoint.[5][6]

In 2016, the company participated in SONNET REMIX 2, a celebration of Shakespeare's Sonnets, at West Park Presbyterian Church.[7]

In 2018, Stairwell Theater staged a workshop version of Romeo and Juliet at Old First Reformed Church, set in a tribalized contemporary society where team sports basketball dominates society.[8]
