St Paul's Church is an active Anglican church in the suburb of Westham at Weymouth, Dorset, England. Designed by George Fellowes Prynne, it was built in 1894-96 of Portland stone with Bath stone dressings.[1] The church has been Grade II Listed since 1974,[2] while the World War I memorial outside the church became Grade II Listed in 2016.[3] In their book The Buildings of England: Dorset, John Newman and Nikolaus Pevsner noted the church's "idiosyncratic but convincing design".[2]

History

For centuries, Weymouth had been served by All Saints Church in Wyke Regis, however the growing population of the town throughout 19th century led to the construction of new churches, including St Paul's Church in the suburb of Westham.[4] St Paul's was preceded by a chapel at Abbotsbury Road, which had been built in 1880, along with St Paul's School. However, as Westham's population continued to increase into the 1890s, Reverend Sydney Lambert held a meeting in 1892 to propose the building of a church on land already purchased for £60.

The foundation stone was laid on 9 May 1894, however legal issues with the original builder resulted in a new one, Mr Ford, being appointed in 1895. The church was opened in 1896 after being consecrated on 25 January, although further building work on additional features of St Paul's continued until 1913. The church cost £5,267 to build, which had been raised by public subscription.[5][6] The original 1880 chapel opposite the road became the church's parish room.[7]
