St. Ignatius College, Pamplona, Spain, was founded by the Society of Jesus in 1946, 446 years after the Jesuits had opened their first school in Pamplona. The school includes infant, primary, ESO, and baccalaureate, in addition to attending to diversity through the Transition Unit and the Specific Curriculum Unit.

History

As a soldier and "servant of the court" Ignatius of Loyola was injured in the Battle of Pamplona in 1521, which set him on a new course toward the founding of the Society of Jesus. On 19 April 1580 Don Juan Piñero Elio, Lord of Eriete, founded the first school of the Society of Jesus in Pamplona, on the street that took their name. It was called Annunciation. St. Teresa of Ávila supported its foundation and its first director was Jesuit Fr. Martínez Bautista.

The College was closed in 1767 when Charles III expelled the Jesuits from Spain. The old building currently houses the School of Languages of the Government of Navarre.

Until 1946 there was no other Jesuit College in Pamplona. Then Colegio San Ignacio opened at 31 Mayor Street with three classes of students. The next year it moved to Paso Arrieta villa, and two years later to 17 Media Luna Street, since its 128 students had outgrown the current school. In 1951, with he Bishop officiating, the new school at 32 Calle Bergamin opened, now with 291 students.

In 1959 the Church of the Immaculate was opened. Loyola Hall was inaugurated in 1962 with a presentation of scenes from "El Divino Impaciente" by the literary students. The College grew with the opening of Padre Moracho building in 1964. There were then 898 students.

For twenty years the College continued to grow. In 1983 construction began on a six-storey building on Larrabide Street. In the next year twelve students were admitted to the new EGB program. Enrollment reached its peak in 1986, at 1,826 students. Then began a slump in the birthrate, which has continued. The facilities have been continually improved and refurbished, including a shaded walkway.[1]

Facilities include two laboratories, a large hall, theater, sports center with two tracks, football field with artificial turf, and basketball court.[2][3]

Programs

With its interest in forming the whole person for life, the College offers several programs. Besides the Eucharist and prayer experiences, it offers Ignatian retreats, group and community partnerships,[4] volunteer experiences, summer work camps, and opportunities to be counselors at camps.[5] It also hosts the annual solidarity day sponsored by ALBOAN.[6][7][8]

Clubs and sports include: debate,[9] judo, chess, theater, funky school/hip hop, robotics, ballet, and workshops in entrepreneurship, magic, public speaking, photography, and cooking.[10] Two students of the College received the Young Humanists award in a University of Navarra contest.[11]

The children's choir graces the celebrations at the Church of the Immaculate and sings both sacred and other music both in Spain and abroad. They sing at Pueri Cantores International Congresses, travelling to Rome, the Netherlands, Lyon, Austria, Portugal, Kraków, Stockholm, Belgium and several capitals of Spain.[12]

Scouting is offered for all age groups, including camping experiences. Their motto is: "Leave the world better than we find it."[13]
