The St. Francis of Assisi Church[1] (French: Église de Saint François d’Assise) or simply Church of St. Francis,[2] is the name given to a religious building belonging to the Catholic Church and is located in the town of Baie Lazare,[3][4] an administrative district of the first order on the island of Mahé in the archipelago and African country of Seychelles.[5]
History
The first church dates back to 1888, but the current church was opened in 1953.[6] It follows the Roman or Latin rite and depends on the diocese of Port Victoria or Seychelles (Dioecesis Portus Victoriae or seychellarum). Its architecture has become a tourist attraction.
Recently, the building one of the most important architectural works of the place was reopened after it was closed for a while for renovations. The funds used come from parishioners and the state.
