In 1967 founder and executive chairman, Allen Ambor, opened the Golden Spur in Newlands, Cape Town in South Africa.

Spur caters for the whole family and earned a reputation for tasty, nutritious, value-for-money meals.

The Spur Group consists of Spur International, Spur Steak Ranches, Panarottis Pizza Pasta, John Dory’s Fish Grill Sushi, The Hussar Grill, RocoMamas, Spur Grill & Go and Casa Bella.

It currently has 569 outlets worldwide, with restaurants in various parts of Africa, Mauritius, the Middle East and Australasia. These can be broken down into 333 Spur Steak Ranches (includes Spur Grill & Go restaurants), 94 Panarotti's Pizza Pasta outlets, 54 John Dory’s restaurants, 18 The Hussar Grill, 63 RocoMamas and 7 Casa Bella restaurants. Spur Steak Ranches is an international brand with over 292 local and 41 international restaurants in countries like Australia, New Zealand, Mauritius, and various parts of Africa.

Their menu offers steaks, ribs, burgers, cheddamelt schnitzels, desserts and kids’ meals. They offer weekday specials with value-for-money deals, such as the Unreal Breakfast and the Classic Monday Burger.

Spur caters itself as a restaurant for the whole family, catering for the needs of kids. This include a full kids’ menu, a play area (with climbing walls, jumping castles and Xboxes at selected restaurants), a loyalty club, birthday parties, free balloons, activity sheets, and fun digital applications, specifically aimed at the children’s market to keep the kids entertained.

Panarotti's Pizza Pasta

The company also owns the Panarotti’s pizza and pasta restaurant chain. This chain was started in 1990[2] and has 94 outlets. In addition, the Spur Group purchased a 60% shareholding in John Dory’s Fish and Grill in 2004.[2] John Dory's is a KwaZulu-Natal-based franchise with 54 outlets.
