Special Security Division

The Special Security Division is a 2-star Pakistan Army led command raised in September 2016, prompted by major concerns over how to protect the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) from serious internal and external threats. [1]

It consists of civil-military units with (9) Pakistan Army infantry battalions and (6) 'Civil Armed Forces' 'wings' giving a total of 13,700 personnel. The Interior Ministry under Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan funds the civil component, composed of Ranger and Frontier Corps units. [2]

The SSD is the land-based complement and partner to CPEC's maritime security command, Task-Force 88 raised in December 2016 led by the Pakistan Navy and which includes the Maritime Security Agency and Pakistan Marines.[3] [4]

China expressed its satisfaction with these security arrangements in the sixth Joint Cooperation Committee meeting.
