The Special Anti-Terrorist Unit (Serbian: Специјална антитерористичка јединица / Specijalna antiteroristička jedinica; abbr. CAJ / SAJ) is the police tactical unit of the Serbian Police.

History

Milos Bujenović was appointed as the first commander of the Special Police Force of RSUP SR of Serbia. The first base of the newly established Unit was at the Police Station in New Belgrade. The unit moves to Belgrade Airport in Surčin in 1983. Since 1991, the original name of the unit has been changed to the Anti-Terrorism Unit. The SAJ command was founded in 1992, besides Belgrade, it received the Novi Sad and Pristina branches. Zoran Simović was the head of the then Belgrade unit, Novi Sad was led by Branko Jurčić, and Pristina Radoslav Stalević. During the war in 1992, the Unit moved to the first dedicated base in which it is still today near Batajnica, called Training Center "13 May".[2]

The new title Special anti-terrorist unit is acquired in 1994. The unit operated on the suppression of terrorism in the territory of Kosovo and Metohija during 1998 and 1999. During these struggles with terrorists, 17 members of the unit were killed. The special anti-terrorist unit was commanded by: Radovan Stojčić, Miodrag Tepavčević, Živko Trajković and Milovan Glišović. Since 2005, the SAJ commander is Spasoje Vulević (the first Serbian policeman who completed the American FBI Academy). From 1978 to 2008, around 650 members passed through SAJ. On September 20, 2008, SAI officially celebrated 30 years since its inception.

Celebration and demonstration exercises were attended by the highest state officials, representatives of embassies and numerous personalities from cultural and public life. Celebrations next to the top police, Minister Ivica Dačić and director Milorad Veljović, were attended by HE. K. В. Prince Crown Prince Alexander Karadjordjević, Prime Minister Mirko Cvetković, Assembly Speaker Slavica Djukić Dejanović, Defense Minister Dragan Šutanovac, Chief of Staff of the Army of Serbia Zdravko Ponoš. The presence of almost the entire state and police summit at a celebration in the base near Batajnica is the highest recognition that this unit has received for its work since its inception.

Structure

SAJ has four teams: "A", "B", "C" and "D". The "fist fist" is represented by teams "A" and "B" that solve complicated hostile situations, dropping in jets, buses, breaking into barred objects, arresting dangerous and armed persons and criminals. Team C is specialized and consists of: Sniper Group, Diving Group, Dog Training Group, Mine Explosive Substances and Biological and Chemical Products (BHS). When performing tasks "A", "B" and "C", the team acts coordinated, as a single entity, a team in which each has precise tasks. The "D" team provides important personalities and facilities that are threatened by the immediate threat of a terrorist attack and provide fire support. The logistical support is provided by the Medical Group, the Group for the Construction and Testing of Arms and Ammunition, the Technical and Emergency Service.
