South Fremont High School is a four-year public secondary school in St. Anthony, Idaho,[1] one of two high schools in the Fremont School District #215. The school colors are red and black and the mascot is a cougar. They are classified as a 3A school. The school is involved in many programs, including athletics.

Controversies

In 1992, the school caught the attention of the American Civil Liberties Union for displaying a nativity scene in a school hallway. The scene contained two-inch tall figures which were arranged by the school's student council. The ACLU argued that the display was a violation of the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, which guarantees separation of church and state.[4]

The school also received criticism in 1998 for holding its graduation ceremonies at Ricks College, which is run by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A school board member claimed that the ceremony would be uncomfortable for students who were not Mormons.[5] The ACLU had fought with the school district in the 1980s to move its high school graduation from a LDS church building to a public school.[4]

Athletics

South Fremont competes in athletics in IHSAA Class 3A, and is a member of the Mountain Rivers Conference.

The school participates in Fall sports such as football, volleyball, soccer, and cross country. They participate in sports such as basketball and wrestling in the winter. They participate in baseball, softball, rodeo, and track in the spring. There is also a cheerleading team. The school has two main rivals, which are Sugar-Salem High School and Shelley High School.

The head coaches of the school's athletics are Chad Hill (football), Bobbi Tews (volleyball), Liz Pope (Cross Country), Lisa Thueson (girls basketball), Ryon Pope (boys basketball), Eckman (wrestling), Ryon Pope (track). The athletic director is Chris Tucker.

The boys basketball team received the school's first basketball state title in the 2014-15 season. The team won the Champion title after the champion game against the Buhl Indians in the Ford Idaho Center. After the win, the citizens of St. Anthony welcomed home the team by lining their cars up against the road with their headlights on at three in the morning. Almost seventy cars lined the streets.

In 2015 three of the boys basketball team won State Individual Titles. Conrad Bauer (senior) won Player Of the Year. Alec Pope (junior) won 1st Team All-State. Blake Bartschi (sophomore) won 2nd Team All State.

  • Jason Buck, former NFL defensive lineman for Cincinnati Bengals and Washington Redskins, first-round 17th overall pick in 1987 NFL Draft by Cincinnati Bengals, winner of Outland Trophy in 1986 at BYU.[7]
  • Brandon Bair, defensive lineman for the Oregon Ducks, Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders, and Philadelphia Eagles.
