Soukarya Ghosal (Bengali: সৌকর্য ঘোষাল; born 7 June 1986)[1] is an Indian film director, lyricist, animator and screenwriter who works in Bengali cinema. He came to the limelight after directing his first feature film Pendulum (2014).[2] His second film Load shedding (2015)[3] written and directed by him was a period film based on teenage love story of 90s nostalgia for Zee Bangla Cinema Originals. His latest feature film Rainbow Jelly[4] is set to release in 2018. It is a Food Fantasy Film made in Bengali language. The story of the film is an outcome of Ghosal's last two years of research on Taste Theory & Ayurveda.

Early life

Ghosal born & brought up in Kolkata, completed his schooling from A. K. Ghosh Memorial School and Jodhpur Park Boys School before graduating from Asutosh College in history. He then studied Media Studies from University of Calcutta in the post graduation level. His strong admiration towards Satyajit Ray's illustration in Sandesh magazine was the key guiding force to become a professional illustrator.

Career

In 2011 as a staff cartoonist he joined Sangbad Pratidin's Sunday magazine "Robbar". While doing comic series like Tenida in Sandesh and "Tenalirama" in "Kishore Bharati magazine" he felt the strong urge for sound and motion in his art. This led him to quit his job and pursue films. Coming directly from the field of Art, Ghosal conceived the idea of his first film "Pendulum" based on a surrealist painter. The Painter who can physically take people into the space he draws. This took him a year to find producer.[5]

2014–2015

7 March 2014, "Pendulum" got released in West Bengal starring Radhika Apte, Rajesh Sharma, Sreelekha Mitra, Rajatabha Dutta, Subhasish Mukherjee, Samadarshi Dutta and Anindiya Banerjee, produced by Cozum Analytics Ltd. In 2015 he made his second film "Load shedding", for the television. It was a teen age love story of 90s starring Riddhi Sen, Meghla Dasgupta,[6] Bidipta Chakraborty, Saili Bhattacharya, Joydeep Kundu, produced by Nideas Creations.

2016–2018

In 2016 he adapted the story "Taranath Tantrik" of Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay for a television series in Colors Bangla, produced by Greentouch Entertainment. In the same year he worked as the second unit director in Srijit Mukherji's Zulfiqar produced by Shree Venkatesh Films. In 2017 his own film production company Indigenous produced "Rainbow Jelly", a food fantasy film in Bengali language. The film is based on an autistic orphan child who can control human mind by cooking several tastes of food. The film shows how the villain's mind gradually changes and he reacts in seven different ways with the taste of Sweet, Sour, Salty, Spicy, Pungent, Astringent & Bitter in his food.[7]
