Sonali Bag

Sonali Bag (Bengali: সোনালী ব্যাগ) is a polythene bag fabricated from jute.[1][2][3] This process of polythene bag production from jute was developed by Bangladeshi scientist Mubarak Ahmad Khan.[4][1][2][5]

History

When the use of conventional polythene in the market started in 1982, environmental activists protested against its harmful effects on the environment. In practice, polythene use was forbidden in different countries.[6] In Bangladesh, the production and marketing of polythene bags in 2002 was banned.[2][1] Though research started several years ago, since the practice of polythene banned, the work of the polyethylene bag began to work in an environmentally friendly way.[7] Jute Mills Corporation started producing Sonali Bags commercially.[8][9][4][10][2] Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave them the name "Sonali Bag" (sonali is Bengali for "golden").[11]

Effect of methods and environment

In the production of jute, polythene bags are first processed by procuring sesulfas from jute.[1] Later polythene bags were made from sealed cellulose bags.[12] Jute made of sonali bags easily mixes with soil and helps to increase fertility in the soil.[6]
