Soh Rui Yong (born 6 August 1991)[3] is a Singaporean national long-distance runner. In 2017, Soh became the first Singaporean male marathoner to win back-to-back SEA Games titles when he won gold again at the Southeast Asian Games.[4][5]

Personal life

Soh's mother Tay Siew Lai is a teacher. He has a younger sister Romaine, aged 22.[6]

Soh graduated from the University of Oregon in the United States, where he studied business administration.

Career

Soh set a new Singapore half marathon record of 67:21 at the 2015 Rock N' Roll San Jose Half Marathon, defeating previous record holder Mok Ying Ren.[7]

Soh then clocked a new personal best time of 2:24:55 at the 2016 Chicago Marathon, making him the fastest Singaporean ever on an AIMS certified course.[8]

He won his first marathon gold at the 2015 Southeast Asian Games and became the first Singaporean male marathoner to win back-to-back SEA Games titles when he won gold again at the 2017 Southeast Asian Games despite almost being expelled from the team a week before the race.[9]

In August 2017, Soh courted controversy when he was given a formal warning by the Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) over a breach of regulations regarding the promotion of personal sponsors on social media during the Southeast Asian Games. In September, after winning the marathon gold, he protested having to donate 20 per cent of his $10,000 Multi-Million Dollar Award Programme (MAP) prize money to Singapore Athletics (SA), as he said he retained his gold medal "without any coaching help from SA".[6][10][11]
