In March 2015, Italian Andrea Giani was announced as a new head coach of Slovenian national team.[1]

On 18 September 2015 Slovenia achieved their first medal at the European Championships. Slovenian national team lost in the final against France (3–0) and achieved silver medal in Arena Armeec, Bulgaria. One of the Slovenian players, Tine Urnaut, received an individual award for the Best Outside Spiker.[2] Because of historic result at this championships, Slovenia improved their position in FIVB world ranking from 39th to 25th place.

On 26 January 2017, Giani resigned as a head coach of the team.[3] He was replaced by Slobodan Kovač.[4] On 28 May 2017, Slovenia qualified for the 2018 edition of the FIVB Volleyball Men's World Championship, their first-ever qualification for the tournament.[5]
