Sir John Brownlow, 3rd Baronet
Sir John Brownlow, 3rd Baronet (26 June 1659 – 16 July 1697) was an English Member of Parliament.
Life
Brownlow was the eldest surviving son[1] of Sir Richard Brownlow, 2nd Baronet of Humby, and Elizabeth Freke. He was educated at Westminster School. He succeeded his father as third Baronet of Humby in 1668 and in 1679 he inherited the Belton estates from his great-uncle Sir John Brownlow, 1st Baronet of Belton. He built the present Belton House between 1685 and 1687, creating new gardens and lakes. [2]
In 1686 he was treasurer of the Marshalsea and in 1688 appointed as High Sheriff of Lincolnshire. In 1689 he was elected to the House of Commons for Grantham, a seat he held until his premature death in 1697.
Family
Brownlow married Alice, daughter of Richard Sherard, in 1676. He committed suicide in July 1697 after suffering from severe gout, aged only 38, without surviving male issue. He was succeeded in his title by his younger brother William Brownlow, who received Belton House on condition that John's wife Alice retained possession during her lifetime (William died in 1701, Alice lived until 1721). It therefore passed in 1721 to William's son John Brownlow, 1st Viscount Tyrconnel.
His remaining estate was divided among his daughters: [3]
- Jane (died 1736) - married the 2nd Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven in 1711
- Elizabeth (1681–1723) - married the 6th Earl of Exeter in 1699
- Alicia (1684–1727) - married the 2nd Baron Guilford in 1703

- Eleanor (1691–1730) - married her first cousin, John Brownlow, 1st Viscount Tyrconnel, son of his brother Wiilliam, in 1712.
