Sinemia is a social platform for moviegoers and a monthly subscription-based service for movie tickets. The service combines location-based technology and banking infrastructure to give members access to movie tickets for one low monthly fee. Sinemia allows its members to see any movie (including 2D, 3D, IMAX) for a monthly fee. The privileges of a Sinemia Premium membership include: access to major theaters, no blackout dates or showtimes, and the ability to see movies more than once. Sinemia can be used in every major theater that accepts MasterCard.

Sinemia was only available in California but now has expanded to US, UK, Canada, Turkey and Australia.

Service

Sinemia works via a smartphone app (iPhone, Android and Windows Phone) and a specially designed, reloadable debit card (MasterCard infrastructure), which is shipped to new members after they sign up.

In order to purchase a ticket, members must be within 500 feet of the chosen theater. The members must check into the theater via the Sinemia smartphone app and select their preferred movie. Once they check-in, their debit card is automatically loaded with the exact amount for a single ticket at the chosen theater. The card can then be used like any other form of credit or debit card to purchase a ticket at the ticket counter.

Additional Features

Sinemia Social is a content platform that features unique movie-related content such as news, specially curated movie lists, and includes a comprehensive database for actors, actresses, trailers, and movies. Sinemia Social does not require a Sinemia Premium subscription.

History

In 2014, Sinemia was founded by entrepreneur Rıfat Oğuz.[1]

In 2016, Sinemia received an investment from 500 Startups and raised $1.5M for its initial US expansion led by Revo Capital.[2]

In 2018, Sinemia started to pass along the "convenience fee" charged by online ticket vendors.[3] This fee is typically around $1.00.

That same year, Sinemia was also sued by rival Moviepass for patent infringement.[4] The alleged infringement regards the concept of a physical payment card used to process movie ticket purchases.

Media Coverage

Sinemia has been featured in a wide range of publications such as CNN, Tech EU, Forbes, Fortune and The Wall Street Journal.[5]
