Simonis is a station on the Brussels Metro serving lines 2 and 6 via two different levels. It opened on 6 October 1982 and is situated at the end of Boulevard Léopold II. It is close to Elizabeth Park and the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. The station was named after the Belgian sculptor Eugène Simonis. The station is also served by buses, a tram and the Belgian national railway.

On April 2009, as a result of the reorganized metro lines 2 and 6 (which now go in a loop-trajectory), Simonis was given two separate names corresponding to the two separate moments that the lines call this station:

  • the north-south tracks upper platform of lines 2 and 6 was renamed "Simonis (Leopold II)"
  • the east-west tracks lower platform of lines 2 and 6 was renamed "Simonis (Elisabeth)"
  • the railway station, the tram 19 station and the bus stops kept the old name, i.e. "Simonis"

On November 2013, the metro station was renamed again:

  • the north-south tracks upper platform of lines 2 and 6 was renamed "Simonis"
  • the east-west tracks lower platform of lines 2 and 6 was renamed "Elisabeth"
  • Nothing changed for the railway and tram stations underground and the bus stops above-ground.

Since December 2009, Simonis is served by the National Railway Company of Belgium's local commuter rail services[1] on line 28. The line runs from Brussels-South to Schaerbeek, but currently the trains stopping at Simonis go between Brussels West and Dendermonde. The opening of the line forms part of the ongoing effort to develop the Brussels Regional Express Network.

The station is served by the following service(s):

  • Brussels RER services (S10) Dendermonde - Brussels - Denderleeuw - Aalst
