The Siege of Pyongyang was part of the Japanese invasions of Korea. Konishi Yukinaga, a Japanese daimyō, captured Pyongyang and garrisoned his force in the winter of 1592.

Background

Konishi Yukinaga's First Division arrived at the Daedong River on 16 July and after a few days Kuroda Nagamasa's Third Division joined him as well. Unable to cross the river they waited there. Negotiations took place a day later but nothing came of it.[3]

Seonjo of Joseon fled Pyeongyang 19 July and made his way to Yeongbyeon.[4]

Battle

Gim Myeongweon sent out a small contingent across the river to attack the Japanese camps at night. Initially successful, the Koreans managed to kill several hundred enemies before dawn, at which point Kuroda's camp counterattacked. The Koreans were driven to the river where they fled at a shallow stretch, alerting the Japanese to a path to the city.[4]

The Japanese crossed the river on 24 July and found the city completely deserted except for vast amounts of rice to feed their army.[4]

Aftermath

The Japanese occupation of Pyeongyang would not be contested until Zhao Chengxun arrived with 6,000 men on 23 August 1592.[5]
