The Sialkot-Lahore motorway (SLM) is an under construction north-south motorway in Pakistan, which will connect Lahore to Sialkot via Sambrial. The motorway is 91 km long. The project is expected to be complete in August 2019 at a cost of 44 billion rupees.[1] Once completed, it will reduce the travel time between Sialkot and Lahore to just 50 minutes.
Route
The motorway will be four laned, having seven interchanges, eight flyovers, 40 bridges and 70 underpasses. Three industrial zones and two universities would also be established along the project. It will be linked with M2 and N5 through Lahore link road near Kala Shah Kaku. The route will run parallel to GT road, passing east of Daska, east of Sambrial and end in Gujrat.
History
The SLM was conceived by Ex Chief Minister Punjab Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi in 2006 and foundation stone was laid in 2007, by President Pervez Musharraf, but no actual work was started. In 2010, the SLM would have been opened to the public but the Punjab government has shelved project due to non-availability of the funds. Disqualified Ex prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, again ordered to construct the road. National Highway Authority (NHA) had shortlisted only two companies—FWO and a foreign firm—selected for this project. This road will definitely uplift this city and the surrounding rural hinterland.
An extension of this project is also in it's bidding phase, Sialkot to Kharian motorway which will also be started soon.
