The extended play was preceded by two singles "Don't Kill the Fun" and "Shoulda Been There".

Background and promotion

Following the success of Sevyn's debut extended play (EP) entitled Call Me Crazy, But... debuting on Billboard's Hot 200 chart at No. 30 and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart at No. 5 with 17,000 copies sold, according to Nielsen SoundScan.[4][5] Streeter released a teaser trailer for the new single "Don't Kill the Fun" featuring Chris Brown on January 8, 2015 announcing the song would be released on January 13, 2015.[6] On April 28, 2015 Streeter released a statement on her Instagram account about "4th Street" a single that was released on stating "I wrote 4th Street on a day I found out someone I loved broke my heart into a million pieces.. This song is not about the 2nd single and not a follow up to "Don't Kill the Fun", that will come soon.[7] On July 13, 2015 "Shoulda Been There" featuring B.o.B would be the next single.[8]

On August 10, 2015, Streeter was interviewed on Sway Calloway's radio show "Sway in the Morning" discussing her songwriting process, working with Eric Bellinger, Chris Brown, relationship with then boyfriend B.o.B and "Shoulda Been There Pt. 1".[9] On October 3, 2015, it was announced Streeter would embark on a 7-date tour starting November 2 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and finishing November 22 in Sacramento, California.[10][11]

Critical reception

The extended play was met with a positive response from critics. Rap-Up stated "While she readies her debut On the Verge, Sevyn Streeter holds fans over with her new project Shoulda Been There, Pt. 1. The 13 tracks, half of which are interludes, include the Chris Brown-assisted single "Don't Kill the Fun", "Boomerang" with Hit-Boy, and the title track featuring her boo B.o.B."[12] ThisisRnB stated "The time has finally come for Sevyn Streeter drop it like it's hot and give us some brand new tunes! While she decided to push her debut album, On The Verge, back a little longer, the R&B vixen holds fans over with the new EP Shoulda Been There, Pt. 1."[13] That Grape Juice stated ""An appetizer before the main course" are the words used by singer/songwriter/dancer Sevyn Streeter to describe her new 13-track EP 'Shoulda Been There, Pt. 1.' And, after one listen to the delectable collection of tunes, including the recently released title track with boyfriend/rapper B.O.B. and the carnival-inspired 'Don't Stop the Fun' (featuring Chris Brown), we're certain you'll be hungrier than ever for what the talented beauty is serving up."[14]
