Shingetsu News Agency

Shingetsu News Agency (新月通信社, Shingetsu tsūshinsha), frequently abbreviated as the SNA, is a Japanese news agency based in Minato, Tokyo. It was established in December 2010 by researcher and journalist Michael Penn, the head of the Shingetsu Institute. In its website, the SNA stated that its main mission is to bridge the large gap between the mainstream Japanese media and the foreign media, and increase the understanding of Japan in the international society.[1] The SNA largely publishes in English, but also occasionally publishes in Japanese.

Shingetsu Institute era

The Shingetsu Institute (新月研究所, Shingetsu kenkyūsho) is a research institute founded by Michael Penn in August 2004 in Kitakyūshū, Japan. The Shingetsu Institute tracks Japanese political, economic, and cultural relations with Islamic countries and peoples from Morocco to Indonesia.

The main activity of the institute is to produce the Shingetsu Newsletter, which announces new developments in Japanese-Islamic relations, and hosts discussions among scholars. The Shingetsu Newsletter has been issued since June 2005, and averages about 25 issues monthly. Most of the activities of the Shingetsu Institute are profiled and explained on the institute's webpage.

In its brief history, the Shingetsu Institute has been mentioned in publications such as Newsweek International Edition (May 1, 2006), the Japan Times, and the Asahi Shimbun.

Michael Penn

Michael Penn (マイケル・ペン, Maikeru Pen) is the president of the Shingetsu News Agency. Penn was born in Los Angeles, California in June 21, 1970. After graduating from the University of California, Santa Barbara, he studied at the Center of Middle East Studies in the University of Texas at Austin before coming to Japan in 1997. He became a lecturer in Kitakyushu University in 2000 and formed the Shingetsu Institute in 2004 with his academic colleagues.

Penn quitted his academic position to began working as a reporter in April 2010. This led to the formation of the SNA in December the same year. Penn and his agency now contributes to various international news organization, such as Al Jazeera, Japan Times and GlobalPost.[2] He had served as the vice chairman of the Foreign Correspondents' Club of Japan until June 2015.
